PART I: Dow and Mespack Partner to Drive Recyclability
At PELV Dow announced an exciting collaboration with Mespack–an OEM of form fill seal equipment–that will advance efforts that improve sustainable packaging for convertors and brand owners. Mespack’s horizontal form fill seal (HFFS) machine is capable of running Dow’s RecycleReady films, which provide a sustainable film design approach for high-performance flexible pouches that can be recycled in the Store Drop-Off program in North America. Dow is installing the HFFS machine at its Pack Studios location in Freeport, Texas, where Dow and Mespack will continue to collaborate utilizing Dow resins, specialties and adhesives and Mespack pouch making know-how to accelerate flexible packaging design for recyclability.
PART II: THE #RECYCLECHALLENGE
It all started with a pair of social media video posts about recycling at a Store Drop location. Heather Turner, Marketing Director at Dow posted the short how-to video and tagged co-worker, market manager Chris Gandy and a couple of friends. Gandy got inspired to create his own video and the #RecycleChallenge kicked off. The idea is to educate, encourage and challenge friends, family and co-workers to look for the How2Recycle Store Drop-off label on flexible plastics and take it retail partners (including Target, Walmart, Lidl, and Wegmans) who have collection bins. Gandy made it clear that, “Sustainability and innovation drive everything we do at Dow,” but this particular challenge isn’t about promoting Dow, it’s about recycling and how consumers can inspire others to use Store Drop-off bins to recycle items that can’t be recycled curbside. “The goal isn’t to go viral, although that wouldn’t be a bad thing, the goal is to increase the number of people who are recycling.”
