Yasmin Siddiqi, DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers global marketing director |
Every year, nearly one-third of the food produced in the world for human consumption is lost or wasted, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). At the same time, with global population expected to grow to 9 billion people by 2050, the FAO also reports global food production must be 70 percent greater than today’s level.
“Waste compounds are an already unmanageable issue,” said Siddiqi, DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers global marketing director. “Food safety and security must be the top packaging priority.”
Siddiqi’s talk, “Factors Impacting Food Security,” will center on the Global Food Security Index. Developed by the Economist Intelligence Unit and commissioned by DuPont. The index measures the drivers of food security in 107 countries. Food waste, which impacts food availability, is a key indicator in the Global Food Security Index.
“The tool is designed to promote conversation, collaboration, generate insights and stimulate action,” Siddiqi said. “Only by working together can we feed a growing population.”
Packaging is known to protect food from transit through consumption, preserve food for a longer shelf life and enable single-serving meals that reduce consumer waste. “There is more we can do,” said Siddiqi, “and making this issue the top priority is the first step toward tapping our collective creativity.”
Today, many DuPont businesses contribute to the issue of feeding a growing population and the strain that it places on our planet. These include not only our agriculture and nutrition businesses, but also food protection, packaging and biosciences businesses as well.
DuPont will complement Siddiqi’s talk with technical sessions and open collaboration in North Hall - Room 234 on Sept. 23 and 24. Ann Hriciga, DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers global application development manager, will discuss “Global Trends and Science-Based Capabilities.” DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation will be on display both at the North Hall location and in The Showcase of Packaging Innovations, South Hall, S-6219. Finally, DuPont experts also will be available in the North Hall location to talk about:

Recent winners of the DuPont Packaging Awards illustrate the growing trend in packaging to address food waste issues by extending shelf life and creating single-serve solutions. FreshCase® Packaging by Curwood, Inc. – A Bemis Division – USA, took top honors in the 2012 DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation for packaging that preserves meat’s color while extending shelf life 10 times longer than store-wrapped meat. |
