Aqua Based Technologies (www.aquabased.com), a division of ADM Tronics Unlimited, Inc. (www.admtronics.com), has introduced Aqualene® 5050, a new, eco-friendly, water-based coating that is economical, repulpable and has high oil and grease resistance (OGR) for the paper converting, food packaging and food service industries. It is specifically designed for use with paper, board and new starch-based food packaging substrates (such as PLA) requiring resistance to oil and grease, including; food wrappers and bags, (especially for the fast-food industry), paper and paperboard packaging, microwave packaging, frozen food containers, paper plates, boxes, cups and other demanding packaging and food service applications.
Aqualene 5050 is eco-friendly, with ZERO VOC's (volatile organic compounds), repulpable (all ingredients meet TAPPI Standards for repulpability) and complies with FDA requirements for direct food contact packaging (21 CFR 176.170, 176.180 and 175.320). Aqualene 5050 dries clear and is flexible and non-yellowing making it suitable for diverse end-use applications.
Aqualene 5050 requires very light application levels to achieve desired properties. A minimum coating weight of only 2.0 grams/m2 provides high OGR results of Kit 8 to 10 (3M OGR Kit standard), making it an economical replacement for conventional OGR coatings requiring much higher application levels.
In addition, Aqualene 5050 is VOC-free and does not contain any ozone depleting ingredients, making it environmentally safe, without emission controls or safety procedures required for competitive, hazardous, solvent-based coatings. It is a high-performance product which is applied by conventional coating apparatus - gravure, flexo, rod, roll-coater, etc. It is used as supplied and available in pails, drums and totes.
