Tea health claims mean hot water with FDA
The Food and Drug Administration has issued warning letters to two leading beverage manufacturers over health claims related to green tea. A letter to Dr Pepper Snapple Group said that the label for Canada Dry Sparkling Green Tea Ginger Ale improperly included the word “enhanced” to describe antioxidant benefits from green tea. A letter to Unilever took issue with citations on its Lipton website for studies about green tea lowering cholesterol, which could give it the status of a drug. Both companies said they are reviewing the situations and are committed to full compliance with the law.
