'Green' packaging to spike, report says
Demand in the United States for sustainable packaging is expected to reach $41.7 billion in 2014, according to a report fromThe Freedonia Group.Overall material used in green packaging by 2014 will reach 58 billion pounds, the report predicts. Growth will be highest in degradable packaging, at 13.6% a year between 2004 and 2014, in large part because it is starting from a small base: It made up barely more than 1% of all green packaging by sales in 2009. Recycled-content packaging, which constituted 91% of green packaging in 2009, is expected to increase an average of 3.9% a year between 2004 and 2014. The report named enhanced performance of green packaging materials, stricter regulations and more initiatives by packaged goods companies as factors driving growth.
