American food and beverage packagers and packaging suppliers have announced the formation of an organization to advocate on ecological and economic issues related to packaging. The goal of AMERIPEN, a U.S. equivalent of EUROPEN (for the European Union) and INCPEN (for the United Kingdom), is to give a “compelling voice” to press for “environmentally and economically-sound packaging policy improvements.” The organization will focus both on sustainability issues and on advocacy for regulations that may require changes in corporate obligations. Members include The Coca-Cola Co., ConAgra Foods and Kellogg, along with suppliers Tetra Pak, DuPont, Sealed Air and MeadWestvaco.
