General Mills rids organic tomato cans of BPA
General Mills has announced plans to put some products from its Muir Glen organic line in cans free of bisphenol A (BPA). Canned tomato-based Muir Glen products will be transitioned to cans whose linings do not contain BPA starting “with the next tomato harvest,” according to General Mills’ recently released Corporate Social Responsibility report. The report states that “General Mills continues to believe BPA is safe,” but acknowledges that “some of our consumers would like us to pursue alternatives,” and adds that “other alternatives [are] currently in test.” BPA is the subject of controversy over studies linking it to cancer and reproductive disorders, with debate centered on how much credence to give those studies and whether bans are warranted.
