O-I’s
Lean+Green glass wine bottle honored at the sixth

O-I’s
Lean+Green glass wine package was honored for
"Excellence in Sustainability" at the sixth Annual Walmart and Sam’s
Club Sustainable Packaging Expo in April. O-I produces the Lean+Green glass
package for The Wine Group under the Oak Leaf brand.
The new Lean+Green glass package weighs 11.64 ounces
compared to the previous package that weighed 16 ounces. This change represents
a 27% reduction in weight, saving 3,168 tons of CO2 or the equivalent of taking
480 cars off the road a year. The new bottle also includes 25% recycled
content. The difference between the old and new package includes an overall
weight reduction of product and case, reduces the total carbon footprint and
uses less raw materials.
After collecting more than 30 nominations from Walmart and
Sam's Club buyers, the field was narrowed down to 10 finalists before a panel
of sustainability and packaging experts chose to honor The Wine Group and O-I.
O-I (Owens-Illinois, Inc) is the world’s
largest glass container manufacturer and is headquartered in Perrysburg, OH.
