This approval allows UFlex to use recycled polyethylene (rPE) in food packaging, marking a major step in reducing plastic waste and supporting global brands in meeting their sustainability goals.
The results of comprehensive trials have proven that multilayer food packaging structures with Ixan® polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) can effectively be recycled into valuable feedstock for other applications within a standard polyethylene (PE) based waste stream.
The use of renewable or bio-materials is one of many options to enhance the sustainability of packaging solutions and is complementary to source reduction, end-of-life strategies including recycling and composting, and the inclusion of recycled content.
Other members of the new organization include McDonald’s, Costa Coffee, M&S, Huhtamaki, Seda, Benders, Colpac, Sonoco, ProAmpac, Coveris, Graphic Packaging, and the European Carton Makers Association (ECMA).
The UCO came from Intersnack ANZ in New South Wales where it had been used to cook some of Australia’s favorite snacks like Kettle Chips, CC’s, Natural Chip Company, Thins and Cheezels. Impurities were removed from the UCO before it was delivered to the Geelong Refinery for processing.
These innovative bags, which began rolling out in September 2024, are now available across Tip Top The One, Tip Top The One Gluten Free, and Tip Top 9 Grain loaves in major retailers across Australia.
This launch coincides with a growing demand for sustainable snack packaging, as the global market is due to grow at a rate higher than 5% in the next five years.
