'Pirate' rum goes for classy look

March 1, 2008

A bottle for spiced rum uses sophisticated decoration to achieve a look that’s both edgy and upscale.

The bottle for Kilo Kai rum from Apostrophe Brands features design elements that give the product a subtly “outlaw” feel. The bottle has sprayed amber coloring and a label that mimics the look of grip tape used on skateboards. The logo, designed (along with the rest of the bottle) by Turner Duckworth, has a stylized skull combined with a double-K, evoking the pirate history of Curaçao, the rum’s origin.

The bottle, from Continental Packaging Solutions, uses screen-print decoration to make the logo and product name stand out against the amber walls. Kilo Kai was introduced throughout Illinois this past fall, and will expand to more than a dozen new markets early this year.
