When it comes to fresh produce packaging, oxygen needs to be maintained to keep products in aerobic conditions. During transpiration, humidity gets released and condenses inside the bag, often causing fungal and bacterial infections on the produce. In order to prevent this from occurring and offer longer shelf life to produce products, Uflex developed its Flexfresh Equilibrium Modified Atmospheric Packaging (EMAP).

Flexfresh helps maintain the humidity inside the bag at 98 percent, thereby keeping the product dry without allowing condensation of the humidity.

“This results in very low weight loss of the produce as it continues to breathe in hydrated oxygen available inside the bag,” explains Uflex’s Ashok Chaturvedi. “In several experiments on various products, it was observed that the ratio of oxygen and carbon dioxide has always been maintained at equilibrium. The film provides good release characteristics of CO2 emitted by the produce.”

The Flexfresh film helps prevent the likes of mold growth and disease. Another big benefit is that it’s biodegradable by composting – and it complies with all international regulations.

Flexfresh is currently available as liner bags in 5 kg and 10 kg standard international sizes, as well as flow wraps, FFS film and lidding film. Uflex says that it is in the process of developing Flexfresh across all packaging formats.

Uflex is working with several leading super markets around the world for establishing the benefits of Flexfresh for potatoes, brussel sprouts, papaya, grapes, berries, pomegranates, flowers, beans, broccoli, cauliflower, mango, okra, mushroom, cut vegetables and several other products.

Uflex will also be conducting a series of trials to study the advantages and benefits of using Flexfresh for shelf life extension.
