Toray Plastics (America) Inc. is celebrating its 30th anniversary as a U.S.-based innovator and manufacturer.
Founded in Rhode Island in 1985 by Toray Industries with the vision of growing a national presence for the company's global brands, it now consists of three divisions: Torayfan Polypropylene Film and Lumirror Polyester Film Divisions, located at its 70-acre campus in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and the Toraypef Foams Division, located on 168 acres in Front Royal, Virginia. The company has close to 700 employees.
Over the decades, Toray Plastics has emerged as the internationally recognized leader in the markets in which it participates, providing technological advancements to packaging, industrial, electronics, optical, graphic, automotive, and flooring manufacturers, among others. It has simultaneously planned and implemented a leading-edge environmental program, which includes Rhode Island's largest solar farm, two cogeneration plants, zero landfill, water conservation, extensive recycling, and more.
Toray has also been steadfast in giving back, donating millions of dollars and hundreds of hours of service to institutions and organizations. As an enthusiastic champion of higher education, it has made significant financial donations to the University of Rhode Island to support internship programs and undergraduate and graduate scholarships. The company has also committed $2 million dollars in 2014 towards URI's new College of Engineering campus, which is scheduled for completion in 2018.
"Most businesses never achieve this milestone," says Mike Brandmeier, President and CEO. "That we have thrived is a testament to the expertise, mindset, and commitment of our people, and the relationships we have cultivated with business, government, educational, and non-profit organizations in our communities. We are grateful for the opportunities we've had and look forward to discovering what the next 30 years will bring," he says.
Brandmeier notes that Toray's commitment to innovation and the future of its business is also demonstrated by its ongoing reinvestment in R&D for the development of cutting-edge, next-generation products for each of its core businesses.
