Gypsy Crunch reclosable food packagingGypsy Crunch is a boutique, handcrafted, granola company established in 2011 in Laguna Beach, Calif. The company started on a whim. Founder, Randi Nash, was playing around the kitchen on a rare day, when I had some free time, trying to create a healthy, yummy, breakfast/snack treat that would satisfy both adults and little ones.

When the original recipe, Juji’s Pec-a-boo, turned out to be a success, friends encouraged the development of other flavor profiles for Nash’s children and friends. Within a few weeks, local Laguna residents were knocking on Gypsy's door to order the then seven flavors now named;

  • Emma’s Bada-Bing
  • Zachary’s Brazilian Bombshell
  • Daniels’ Mac-Daddy, and
  • Juliet’s Pec-a-Boo
  • Jordan’s Bohemian Rhapsody
  • Bill’s Summertime Blues
  • Randi’s Pretzel Logic (or Fantasy Baseball)

The first four flavors were named for each of her children, and contain ingredients that fit their taste preferences.

After months of testing recipes at the Food Innovation Center in Portland, Ore., (a division of Oregon State University), the initial recipes were first sold at local Farmer’s Markets in July-August, 2014. The brand saw this opportunity as a chance to have “real life” focus groups, and utilized the constructive feedback from customers to tweak the recipes and determine the perfect target audience.

Its innovative Velcro resealable 14-ounce package was one such innovation that came out of consumer feedback. The bright colors and vibrant packaging easily sets it apart from other granolas.

 Gypsy Crunch can be found throughout the Pacific Northwest, in specialty chain supermarkets such as Whole Foods markets. Its innovative velcro resealable 14-ounce package was one such innovation that came out of consumer feedback.
